There is a big discussion going on at Etsy at the moment. It's about the definition of handmade and the borders of an handmade business. 


This blog has told you more about the bright sides of our business so far. And we don't plan to make you sad today and share all our worries, but it is a fact, that making a living from handmade is not possible for all kinds of handmade goods. It's a fact, that knitters on Etsy often only charge 2 US$/ hour and that our two woman full time business is still not feeding us fully, but instead giving us big sorrows about being able to pay our health insurance for this year. It's a hard thing, considering that we work almost double from what a normal employee does. But Nauli is a dream, our customers encourage us to go further and we don't feel, we should give up. 


We just want to make you think about your own definition of handmade. 

• should handmade be fair(e.g. when it comes to wages)?
• should handmade be conscious?
• should handmade be creative? 
• should handmade be original?

International Pinhole Camera Day

A tweet woke us up this morning, so this is the international pinhole camera day! And me, a passionate pinhole photographer, don't join! I just realised, that I didn't went out with my tins, since I couldn't use the dark room at my former university anymore. Pinhole camera photos are pretty handmade, you know. They mean real analog pictures on paper... and they require a studio for processing the film and print the paper... A lot of experiments to be sure lighten right time and of course one tin per photo.
So, I just share some of my Hamburg pics with you, today.

Ein Tweet hat uns heute morgen aufgeweckt. Heute ist also  international pinhole camera day - internationaler Lochkamera Tag! Und ich passionierte Lochkamera Fotografin mache nicht mit! Mir ist gerade aufgefallen, dass ich schon nicht mehr mit meinen Dosen losgezogen bin, seitdem ich die Dunkelkammer meiner früheren Hochschule nicht mehr nutzen kann.  Lochkamera Fotos sind ziemliche Handarbeit. Sie sind richtige analoge Fotos auf Papier und sie benötigen ein richtiges Dunkelkammer equipment um die Fotos zu entwickeln. Viele Experimente um sicher zu gehe, dass man genau richtig belichtet, und dann natürlich eine Dose per Fotos...

Unsere kleine Nichte wird uns bald besuchen kommen. Wir haben schon mal die Tür zu ihrem Zimmer fein gemacht. In ein paar Minuten war das Masking Tape zurechtgeschnitten und geklebt. Und das praktische ist, es lässt sich leicht wieder entfernen, wenn der nächste Gast kommt.

Our little niece will come for a visit soon. We thought the ealier the better, and already made the door to her room ready. A real fast craft project. We need only some minutes to cut the Washi Tape and stick it on the door. One big advantage is that it can be removed easily when the next guest comes. 

A Very Special DVD Packaging // Eine ganz besondere CD Verpackung

A very special DVD Packaging for a very special photographer was on our working space a while ago. She came to us asking if we could make our Super8 Camera DVD Case with another camera. Sure, we can! We've shared part of the progress with you here, but then totally forgot to show you what we made from it.


Eine sehr besondere DVD Verpackung für eine sehr besondere Fotografin war vor einiger Zeit auf unserem Arbeitstisch. Ihr gefiel unsere Super8 Kamera und sie fragte, ob wir diese mit einer anderen Kamera machen könnten. Natürlich können wir! Einen Teil des kreativen Prozesses haben wir hier gezeigt, aber dann total vergessen zu zeigen, was wir daraus gemacht haben.

Den Holga Linolschnitt haben wir in weiß auf bunte CD Nauli Hüllen gedruckt. Auf dem Foto siehst Du den Druck trocknen.

Dry and ready for a second time to be pressed.

Each CD case is neatly packed in white paper and Washi Tape and ready to be shipped out now.

Jede CD Hülle ist eingepackt in weißes Papier und Masking Tape und fertig um auf die große Reise zu gehen.

Fleamarket - Flohmarkt - Monday Moodboard

Last Saturday we went to the biggest Fleamarket in Bavaria. - It happens once a year at Theresienwiese, the space of the Oktoberfest. You probably can't imagine how big it is. We have been there from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and walked all the time. If you plan to visit Munich and love vintage stuff, you shoud definitely come around 21st of April... 

We were hunting porcelain and - as usual found lot's of other stuff, too. Because we couldn't carry it by public transport, it's still at our uncles house and waits for pick-up. 

Letzten Samstag waren wir auf dem größten Flohmarkt Bayerns. - Einmal im Jahr findet er auf der Theresienwiese statt. Du kannst Dir wahrscheinlich nicht vorstellen wie groß er ist. Wir waren von 9 Uhr vormittags bis Abends um 6 Uhr da und sind die ganze Zeit gelaufen. Wenn Du einen München- Besuch planst und Vintage Sachen liebst, ist das Wochenende um den 21. April auf jeden Fall ein guter Termin...

Wir waren auf der Suche nach Porzellan und haben, wie so oft, einiges anderes gefunden, das jetzt noch bei unserem Onkel darauf wartet abgeholt zu werden, weil es mit der S-Bahn doch zu viel geworden wäre.

Kleine Pause // Little Break

Wir hoffen, wir haben es schon einmal erwähnt. Nauli ist zwar ein Zwei- Schwestern- Unternehmen, aber ehrlich, wir würden nicht halb so viel schaffen, wenn wir nicht tatkräftige Unterstützung hätten. Was für ein Glück, dass wir noch zwei Schwestern mehr haben, die mit Feuer und Flamme dabei sind und wenn Not an der Frau ist ihre Freizeit opfern. Heute hat die eine Geburtstag und da lassen wir den ganzen Stapel Arbeit mal allein und feiern! Gleich geht's los! Alles gute zum Geburtstag kleine Schwester, Du bist die größte!

Hopefully we have told you before. Nauli is a two sisters show, but honestly we couldn't make even half of what we do without strong support. How lucky we are, that we have two more sisters who always give  a helping hand when we need them. Today one of them is celebrating her birthday and we let stacks of work alone and celebrate with her! We gonna leave now! Happy Birthday little sister, you are the best!

about colors on paper // über Farben auf Papier

Wir arbeiten mit Papier, mit Stoff und mit Garn. Diese Woche kam eine neue Lieferung italienisches Papier an. Carta Varese ist eines unserer Lieblingspapiere. Die klassischen Designs sind einmalig. Es ist stabil und haltbar und es hat eine schöne Geschichte. Unsere Papierprodukte sollen im Idealfall genauso lange halten wie Möbelstücke. Was ist da geeigneter als Papier, dass für das Auskleiden von Möbeln entwickelt wurde?

Wer sich mit Druckerei auskennt, der weiß, dass Farben gemischt werden und dass Farbenmischen eine Wissenschaft für sich ist. Selbst Temperatur kann dabei eine Rolle spielen. Wie Garn und Stoff gibt es auch bei unserem geliebten Carta Varese Farbpartien. Anders als bei Wolle stehen die aber nicht auf dem Bogen. So ist jede Lieferung wieder eine Überraschung. Genauso, wie bei unseren Satinbändern und auch bei Buchleinen. (Gilt übrgens auch für andere Papiere.)


We work with paper, with fabric, with yarn. This week we got new Italian paper. Carta Varese is one of our favourites. Its classic design is outstanding. It is durable and has a nice history. Our paper products should ideally last as long as furniture. What's more suitabe for this, than paper developed for lining furniture?

If you know something about printing, you know that dyeing colors have to be mixed and that mixing it is a challenge. Even temperature can influence the result. Like yarn and fabric paper is dyed in batches. Different from yarn the batch number is not written on the sheet. So every order can be a surprise, just like our satin ribbon or book linen. (Same words for other papers.)

Eier mit Washi Masking Tape zu bekleben macht Spaß. Und das nicht nur uns. Fast jeder Besuch, der ins Haus kommt betätigt sich gerne kreativ am Kaffeetisch, wenn der Kuchen schon gegessen ist. Leider mal wieder kein Foto gemacht. Aber hier siehst Du ein Ei, das uns großzügig überlassen wurde.

Decorating Eggs with Washi Tape is fun. And not only we enjoy. Almost every visitor loves to be creative at the tea table, if the cake is already finished. Unfortunately we didn't take a photo again, but here you see an egg, which was left for us.
