Paris is calling... share your tips and win!

Paris calling, originally uploaded by IrenaS.
The Nauli crew and boyfriends will go to Paris end of this month! We are excited. Just today I found this: Holly from Decor8's is asking her followers for the best tipps, as her friend will visit Paris, too... We like the idea... we had asked for an accomodation tipp at the Etsy Europeanstreetteam mailing list already and got great tips. So, why not doing it more public? So more people could read your tips?

Share your Paris experience with us! Tell us, what we shouldn't miss on our 5 days trip and why?
We've booked a small Apartement in Saint Germain.

Nauli is currently working on a new product. Top secret. But very Paris connected. If you share your tips until the 26th of February 2010 you can win this surprise product! We promise, you'll love it, if you love Paris! And it will be sent the same day as it goes to the shops.

  1. St Germain has great restaurants so you're in a good spot.

You should not miss Versailles for sure, Musee D'Orsee has your favorite kind of art, Art Noveau, so don't miss it either!

I personally love Montmartre. I went to Sacre Coeur and went up to the top. Great views!!

Must eat crepes there! They're great!!

I don't know any restaurant names as our Parisian hosts took us everywhere, but you must try beef tartar (beef sashimi). I loved it!!

  2. I love Paris ! Have some great memories from our two trips. My tip is the Fashion Museum; great and very quiet, not on many people's to do list when in Paris.

  3. If you go on a weekend you certainly may not
miss the largest flee market in Europe. It's only openend by Parisiens during the weekend.
It's located next to the Porte de Clignancourt in Saint Quen - www.parispuces.com - Don't miss it ! You will love it and maybe find nice things you can use for crafting !

  4. Well - as MissusD already said: Montmartre, Sacre Coeur. And we've eaten great Crèpes in St. Germaine, so you're located quite well... At Versailles I loved the Petit Trianon and the garden, the little cottages and all, that Marie Antoinette had have built. And as we are talking of Marie Antoinette: Take a look at the Conciergerie, everything is rebuilt like it was, when she was imprisoned there.
Have a great trip!! Would love to go there again :-)

  5. Miss Tiffy is right. My friend insisted that this particular stall near the metro entrance is the best crepe around. Don't know how she came to that because there ARE many crepe stalls.

And Miss Tiffy, you were lucky! I missed out on Petit Trianon. I walked all the way there and it was closed! Still feel like crying thinking of that. Please have a whole day ready for Versailles. It's filled with craftsmanship. Boy is it bourgeois but the kings got the best artisans around to build and decorate the palace didn't they?

Next time, I want to visit the flea markets, and I want to go when it's warm.

Oh gosh, I really want to go there again, but I have to plan to go to other German and European cities.

  8. I used to live in Paris and I love the St Germain area. My favourite shop was a jewellers called Nereides. A fun thing to do locally is to walk to the Seine from blvd St Germain and browse the booksellers stands there, especially the vintage fashion magazines. Have a wonderful trip.

  9. Second desserts. There are many beautiful things to see and do in Paris. The best part of paris is the lifestyle and architecture. Try not to run from site to site- take your time, walk through the small streets, and always have second desserts. You eat dinner, dessert, walk around for a few hours and find a place for another dessert and port. *sigh* fabulous.

  10. Oh trip to Paris! I spent a week there on the Christmas a year ago, loved it so much. We stayed in Montparnasse which is a lovely area to walk around, sit at a cafe and enjoy the Parisian atmosphere.

In fact it's hard to say what was my favorite place as I can better remember those walks aroud the city, little discoveries such as a weekend food market here and there. We avoided tourist spots like Louvre as they do have huge ques. We walked around the Eiffel tower area (looks nice in the evening light) but didn't go to the top, ate a fabulous sea food dinner at Le Dome and had drinks at a small bar. It's a trip I consider one of the very best I ever had. Enjoy yours!

  11. Make sure you eat macarons. I want to go.

  12. Have fun! We had our favorite meal at Au Boeuf Couronne, 188, avenue Jean-Jaures, 75019 Paris, tel. 01 42 39 4444. I saved the matchbook. =)

  13. Oh yes!! Macaroons!!!! Apparently LaDuree has the best ones! Oh my gosh, it was so good!! I think you can find LaDuree at Gallerie Lafayette near Opera. But funnily I saw a LaDuree advertisement at the Marienplatz station, so I don't know if LaDuree is also in Munich.

Near Gallerie Lafayette is this Japanese clothing store called UniQlo which sells very affordable but simple clothing. It was my favorite store in Japan. This store in Paris is HUGE, about 3 stories high. I bought many fleece jackets from UniQlo which has been helpful for the winter in Germany.

I can't help commenting...just put it together as one comment...I guess I can't stop raving about Paris! :D

  14. My favorite section of Paris is the Marais - all of the shops, galleries, and restaurants around the Place des Vosges are incredibly inspiring. Some of my favorites:
    1. Shop: Au Petit Bonheur la Chance. It's located at 13, rue St. Paul, just off the Rue St. Antoine in the historic St. Paul neighborhood of the Marais (close to the Place de la Bastille and the Seine). Lots of vintage stuff, like old school notebooks, writing supplies, paper ephemera, kitchen supplies... it's awesome.

    2. Tour through the Musee National Picasso at 5, rue de Thorigny.

    3. Visit Victor Hugo's old apartment at 6, place des Vosges!

    3. Scope out tons of books, cheap postcards, and calendars at Mona Lisait used bookstore at 17bis, rue Pavée

    4. Window-shop on the rue des Francs Bourgeois which goes from the Place des Vosges to the Centre Pompidou to the West

I WISH I COULD JOIN YOU!! :) Bon voyage!

  16. wow, sounds like a really exciting trip!

i went once with my fiance (now hubby) and it was a wonderful city to explore with someone you love- friend, lover, whomever!

even though they are touristy i must say both the Louvre & Notre Dame were breathtaking & i would have been so disappointed to have missed them.

also...we enjoyed stopping at many different restaurants/patisseries/chocalatiers/cafes- just for little bites- that way we could try many different foods!

enjoy your trip! look forward to hearing about it :)

oh, and thank you for including my card case in your feature!

  17. I was in Paris about 2 weeks ago, so still have fresh memories=))

Here are some places where to go and I enjoyed them all:
nice districts are the 19, 11, 20, 10. Chinatown can be found in the 13th arr. and next to metro belleville (here is also a nice cafe for poetry slams every tuesday or thursday: when you see a big notice "il faut se mefier des mots" turn right and its the first door on the right!)

here are some ideas for going out in paris at night:

la maroquinerie ( very nice place!)

la bellevilloise (just right next door to "la maroquinerie". you have to come early for both of the places! and if you are too late: try to walk left hand (when comming out of the club) and cross the next road to get to the rue de l´ermitage. after 50 meters there should be a nice place on the right side...but I forgot the name)

le bataclan (famous for many things: eating, drinking, club, concerts, its prices...here takes place one of the most important gay partys in paris!...just as an example)

le point ephemere (bar, club, expos) quite nice for a drink or two even in the afternoon!

some other locations which are ok when you didn´t succeed somewhere else.

    social club (ok)

    rex club : techno

    opa (next to bastille)

    le paris paris (poche)

    for checking out other possibilities:

    www.parisbouge.fr

    www.sortiraparis.fr

Flea market could be found at the Metro station Porte de Clignancourt (when you go out of the metro go straight, then you will see a bridge (there will be lots of people selling fake Adidas, Lous Vuitton and so on), but if you go further you will find the whole small city full of antique and vintage finds).

I hope you will enjoy your stay!

  18. I have been a couple times, but I would say now to get the book "Paris by Hand"! It is a little paper back and it a guide book of all types of hand made places , studios and artisans, shops and to die for stuff! I am definitely using it as a resource the next time I go.

    Have fun!

    Have fun!

  20. Hi! I just popped over from Etsy, where you featured me in a treasury! Vielen Dank!

I used to live in Paris and I am sure I have far too many places to recommend for a five day trip. :)

You must go to the marche aux puces if possible. As someone mentioned here is the website http://www.parispuces.com/en/Default.asp with maps and info about each of the individual markets -- my two favorite markets are Vernaison and Paul Bert, but if you like Art Nouveau you may especially enjoy Marche Serpette. All the vendors are open Sat/Sun but many are open Monday as well.

Porte de Vanves also has a lovely market, smaller but less known and thus less crowded (sometimes better deals). And there are brocantes stores all around the city. There is a fantastic art market near Montparnasse. Don't miss the booksellers on the Seine, they are wonderful.

They should at this time of year still have the ice rink set up in front of the Hotel de Villes (just across the river from St. Germain) which is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, either skating or people watching. And across the street between the BHV department store and the Monoprix is my favorite crepe stand in Paris. :)

Go early to the museums to avoid the lines and crowds. My favorite museum is the Musee Marmottan (most Monet works are here) -- a gorgeous building, small enough to see in an afternoon. For the Louvre, do not stand in line outside at the pyramid, go to the carousel du Louvre underground and enter there.

Spend lots of time walking the streets -- seriously, avoid the Metro or take a bus if you must, but Paris is so walkable and you will see so much by walking that you cannot see from underground! Hang out in cafes, soak up the atmosphere, watch the people, and savor the unexpected joy of stumbling into shops and sights you would not otherwise see!

    Have a wonderful time!!!

  21. The subway is really dirty and France itself is rather dirty IMHO, like with litter and stuff.I have been to a few french cities and towns and most were like this. But that was in the late 1980's too so maybe it is different now. I agree with the walking though. We walked every where just about.

  24. This is such a cool idea for a contest! I have been to Paris once and it is where I got engaged! My tip is for travel in general. Make sure to spend time soaking up the local culture in some small shops and cafes. Tourist spots are great, but areas with less traffic are a great way to discover the true gems.

  25. I second visiting 'Au Petit Bonheur La Chance', best paris secret!

If you like paper, you must go Rue du Pont Louis-Philippe, which is within a (very cute) walking distance from 'au bonheur la chance'. For some reason, it's small street almost exclusively filled with paper stores!

For beads, trim, notions, ribbon, yarn, etc., or just to see a beautiful little store, go to the Droguerie, 9 rue du Jour.

For nice design-y finds and a stunning store space, go to Merci, 111 blvd Beaumarchais.

That's all I can think of for now... Have a fun trip!!
